Straw Flute

Our 2 finished straw flutes ready to make music

Straw Flute

You can't see the wind, but you can feel it and hear it. In this activity, you and your child will make and use a fun little wind instrument!

You will need:

  • 9 straws per flute
  • scissors
  • masking tape
  • markers

Making the flutes:

Cut the first straw to a length of six inches. Then cut each straw progressively 1/2 inch shorter. Lay the straws out from longest to shortest. Wrap them in the making tape.

Invite your child to decorate the masking tape with the markers.  You could also add stickers to your design.

Make music!  To use the flute, simply blow air across the top of the flute.  This is not an extraordinarily loud instrument.  If your child is struggling to use the flute, place the top of the flute at their bottom lip holding the flute vertically. Experiment with the different sounds that the flute can make. The longer tubes allow for deeper sound and the shorter tubes make higher sounds.  Enjoy!
