Seed Shaker: A Music Activity for Preschool and Toddlers

Seed Shaker

I decided that it would be fun to incorporate some music into our study of seeds this week. We filled a small water bottle with some birdseed and danced around the room! It was very easy and a toddler could make it (mostly) independently.

Do not do this activity with younger toddlers or children who regularly mouth objects.  Please supervise the children for the duration of this activity due to the small parts (beans and seeds).

You will need:

  • an empty water bottle
  • birdseed
  • a funnel
  • a scoop

I set out all the materials on the kitchen table. I placed the funnel in the mouth of the bottle and showed Little M. how to scoop the birdseed into the funnel. She had a blast scooping the birdseed and watching it fall down the funnel into the bottle. Occasionally, the birdseed would get stuck in the neck of the funnel and I would have to step in and shimmy it a bit to get it moving again. I would recommend using a wide funnel for this reason.

After she had finished filling the bottle with birdseed, I helped her close the top. Then we put on some music and danced around the house taking turns shaking our new instrument!
